The State Fair of Texas is a tradition that has been continuing in the Lone Star state since 1886. Whether you’re looking for some amazing fried fair food, live entertainment, or thrilling rides including the largest Ferris wheel in Texas; the State Fair of Texas is sure to be a great time for you.

One of the most well-known aspects of this State Fair is the legendary Big Tex. Standing at 55 feet tall this giant cowboy is sure to make you know that you’re deep in the heart of Texas. Tex has been at the State Fair since 1952 and over the years, the two have become synonymous with each other. Despite the original Tex burning down in 2012, a new and improved Big Tex will be there to greet you with a wave and a “howdy”, standing tall as ever.

As soon as you step through the gates, the enticing aroma of fair food is going to hit your nostrils and eventually you are going to give in. Along with the classics like fried twinkies, funnel cake, turkey legs and sausage on a stick; this year is unveiling some new heavy hitters that are must tries. Funnel cake bacon queso burger, deep fried fruit loops and a tamale donut are just a few of those newest additions. If you’re a good cook and want to put your skills on the line, there is the Home Depot Competition Kitchen where contestants can cook and present a dish to a panel of judges with the category winners receiving a cash prize and trophy. Besides food, the State Fair of Texas offers hundreds of competitions in other categories as well that participants are welcome to sign up for.

The Texas Star Ferris wheel is another staple of the fair. Embracing Texas’ stance that everything is bigger here, the Star was the largest Ferris wheel in North America from when it was created until 2013. This year is its 30th birthday so make sure save some tickets to take a ride. Hop on it during the day and gets a birds-eye view of all the fair festivities going on below or at night and get a mesmerizing view of the Dallas skyline from 350 feet up.

When I say that the State Fair of Texas has it all…….it literally has it all. From world-renowned artists performing live, ostrich and pig races, dog shows, livestock barns and the largest new car auto show in the southwest. If this is your first stop by the State Fair of Texas, find your favorite rides and fried goods because you’ll most likely be wanting to come back next year to do it all again.
